SAIL - The School for Arts in Learning
Public Charter Elementary School

The School for Arts in Learning (SAIL) is a community educational center whose mission is to serve children with different learning needs through the use of the arts and a project based curriculum. In 1998, WVSA arts connection, an established not for profit, launched a public elementary charter school called The School for Arts in Learning, or SAIL, in Washington, DC, thereby initiating an arts and education partnership. At the core of SAIL's philosophy is the belief that the arts can be used to promote academic and social learning for all children, but in particular, for those who are at risk for school failure. Targeting children with learning differences-those who have been least successful in the traditional public school system-SAIL emphasizes education through the arts to stimulate intellectual, emotion, physical, and social development. In September 2005, SAIL opened its doors to grades 6-9 in an Upper School program, thus continuing our vision to educate using best practices and curriculum presentation through the arts. By September 2008, SAIL will serve grade K-12. SAIL was chartered by the D.C. Public Charter School Board in 2005.
