U.S. Schools and Families Celebrate National Charter Schools Week May 5 – 9, 2008

Washington, D.C. - American families and public charter schools across the U. S. will begin the celebration of National Charter Schools Week today. Approximately 1.2 million children are enrolled in public charter schools throughout the U.S. Over 22,000 students are enrolled in 55 D.C. public charter schools this year, and that number is expected to increase as five new public charter schools open this fall.
"Americans enjoy the freedom of choice in most facets of their lives. The choice of education is one of the most important decisions parents will make for their children," said Thomas Nida, chair of the D.C. Public Charter School . "Without public charter schools, most D.C. parents' choices would be seriously limited," he added.
Among the many activities planned for this week, the U.S. Secretary of Education will host a National Charter School Policy Forum. Secretary Spellings will address approximately 100 national charter school experts and some of the nation's foremost leaders and thinkers on school choice. Charter school leaders will share their success stories and challenges.
The D.C. Public Charter School Board is pleased to collaborate with the many stakeholders in Washington , DC who are committed to quality educational choices for the children of the nation's capital.
