Washington, D.C. — The DC Public Charter School Board (PCSB) at its February monthly meeting approved Howard Road Academy Public Charter School's request to amend its charter to restructure its program and focus on early childhood. In the approved proposal the school would serve only 3 year-olds, four year-olds, and kindergarten students beginning in school year 2013-2014; terminate its contract with its management company Mosaica Education, Inc.; close its Pennsylvania Avenue preschool campus and its MLK middle school campus, and cease offering grades 1 – 6 at its main campus located at 701 Howard Road SE in Ward 8. The early childhood school would be located at the main campus and be open to all students. Students currently enrolled in PK-3 or PK-4 at the main campus or the Pennsylvania Ave campus would be guaranteed enrollment in the restructured school.
For Howard Road parents with children in grades 1 to 8, there will be a school fair tonight, March 5, at the school featuring other charter schools serving students in grades 1 to 8. The fair will be located at 701 Howard Road SE from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Howard Road Academy PCS is in its 13th year of operation and has three campuses; Howard Road Academy - Howard Road Main (grades K through 6), Howard Road Academy - Pennsylvania Avenue (PK3-K), and Howard Road Academy - Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue (grades 7 and 8). Howard Road Academy PCS currently enrolls 720 students enrolled and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
The school’s main campus and its Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) campus were both rated Tier 3 on the 2012 Performance Management Framework (PMF). The Pennsylvania Avenue campus met 7 out of 9 targets on the Accountability Plan while the early childhood grades at the Howard Road Main Campus met 2 of 9 targets on their Accountability Plan.
The Board approved Howard Road’s charter amendment request with several conditions which may be found here.
